External Rendering for Homes and Commercial Buildings

Weather-resistant render systems for new builds, extensions and refurbishments, chosen to suit the building, its location and the finish you want.

Detached house with a smooth rendered finish

Quick answer

What types of render are there?

The main render types used in the UK are sand and cement, silicone (thin-coat) render, monocouche (through-coloured, one-coat) render, acrylic render and lime render. Silicone and monocouche renders are through-coloured and need little maintenance; lime render is breathable and is usually the right choice for older solid-walled buildings.

Choosing the right render

The right system depends on the background, the age of the building and the look you want. Modern blockwork suits silicone or monocouche systems with a through-coloured finish that does not need painting. Solid brick and stone buildings built before around 1920 generally need a breathable lime render so moisture can escape rather than being trapped behind a hard cement coat.

We also apply traditional sand and cement renders for painting, and base coats with mesh reinforcement where walls are prone to movement or where different backgrounds meet.

Preparation and detailing

Render lasts when the details are right. We fix stop beads, bell-cast beads above damp-proof courses, corner beads and movement joints as required, and form neat returns at windows and doors. Existing failed render is hacked off and the background repaired before new render goes on.

Rendering is weather-dependent, so we programme external work to avoid frost, heavy rain and strong direct sun during application and curing.

Planning and permissions

Rendering a house is often permitted development, but not in conservation areas, on listed buildings or where planning conditions restrict it. Please check with your local planning authority before committing; we are happy to provide product details for any application.

FAQ

Rendering questions

Can’t see your question? Contact us or call 07377 741264.

How long does external render last?

A well-applied silicone or monocouche render typically lasts 20 to 30 years with occasional cleaning. Lime render can last far longer when it is maintained with breathable finishes.

Can you render in winter?

Render should not be applied when temperatures are below about 5°C or when frost is expected during curing. We schedule external work around the weather and will move dates rather than compromise the finish.

Do you arrange scaffolding?

Yes. We can arrange scaffolding through an approved scaffolder, or work from scaffolding already on site from your main contractor.
