Quick answer

What is Venetian plaster?

Venetian plaster is a decorative finish made from slaked lime and fine marble dust, applied in several very thin layers with a steel trowel and then burnished to create depth and a soft sheen. It can range from matt and cloudy to highly polished, and can be tinted to almost any colour. It is typically sealed with wax or a protective sealer in wet areas.

Where polished plaster works well

Polished plaster suits feature walls, stairwells, receptions, bathrooms and shower areas (with the correct system), restaurant and hotel interiors, and retail spaces where a seamless, tactile finish is wanted. Because the colour runs through the material, small marks can often be polished out.

Samples, substrate and finish

Every polished plaster finish looks slightly different depending on the product, colour, number of coats and hand of the applicator. We prepare sample boards so you can approve the colour and level of polish before we start.

The substrate must be flat and stable, so walls are usually skimmed or lined first. In wet areas we use a system designed for moisture exposure and seal it according to the manufacturer’s guidance.

Can Venetian plaster be used in bathrooms?

Yes, with a suitable system and sealer. Some products are designed for splash zones and showers when applied over the correct substrate. We confirm suitability for each area before quoting.

How long does a polished plaster wall take?

Allow several days for a typical feature wall, as each coat needs time to dry before the next is applied and polished.
